Is it possible to clear out the recent post by these spanbots or better block them altogether

I sort of cant work out what they are trying to achieve. Their posts make no sense

It's usually for search engine boosting. There will be a link somewhere in the post. The rest of the word junk then desensitises spam detection by containing both a selection of random words and tags that help boost search ratings

Yes, where are the Moderators when you need them eh? :D

Sorry guys we decided to stop activation by Administration because of a) no spammers for a year and b) when we did it increased the number of registrations.

As Martin says the posts are lead by search engine optimisers which pick out words in the posts so the postd probably make no sense.

I've increased the password and screen name sensitivity to see if that works but if not we'll have to go back to Administration registration.
