navonics and android

by betty boop » 15 May 2016, 12:50

coming out of the closet and confessing now to owning an android tab. :o

so , 2 things happened today firstly downloaded the best android app ever, Anchor watch. :D ;)

secondly tried to install Navonics UK/Holland and it won't download. tells me its not compatible with the version of Android or something. Apparently its something others have experienced but before I go shelling out another £25 for the App I wanted to know if anyone has a better app for charts or if theres a work around anyone has heard of for the same purpose?

and I guess 3rd as its been 5 years since my last Android visit anything else anyone would recommend for boaty stuff in the play store?

I cant help with an answer to your problem, but I've been looking into doing this as well. There's a very interesting thread on the WSF forum that might hold the answer for you.

If you read past the first page they get onto Android Tablets and Navionics.

not sure about Navonics yet and still waiting a reply from them but in the mean time Im drawn to visit my harbour.co.uk Ive used these before and the are good for the PC, now they do an android download set for £8 +£5 for a navigator app. My only issue is the are Raster maps, which I believe are scanned copies of originals with a GPS overlay on the app. Im not so sure how well they react to zooming and detail on a tablet. the navonics was quite good on zoom and the HD even better.

I agree, Navionics on a HD 10" tablet is superb, my neighbouring boat at the marina has it on a Samsung tablet and he was showing me last week. The difference in detail between my Lowrance and his tablet is staggering. I've been trying to convince SWMBO that we 'need' to have it on her tablet as a backup........

I'm in the lucky position of having a 10" Android tablet (Asus Zenpad 10), a 9" iPad and an iPad mini. I don't use the sea a lot and only for the odd day out along the Welsh coast, but as i'm off to Barmouth for a week, which is the best app for either IOS or Android? I don't want to shell out too much for a week...

tnx

Edit - i just down loaded both boating HS and boating apps from Navonics to compare the difference, 'boating' offers a 2 week trial of the UK region charts - looks very good. 'Boating HD' offers the same trial (can't tell a difference) but the app shows a year subscription is provided when downloaded as a trial. Not sure if thats a mistake guess I'll find out in 2 weeks  but could be a bargain download.

Alternatively you won't beat the £13 for the visitmyharbour.co.uk set up and it has a yearly chart update too,

I've downloaded Navionics Boating and Boating HD on my Galaxy S5 phone, Galaxy Tab 3 and Asus Zenpad 10. Comparing the HD version and non-HD verion: For the extra £20, I really can't see what you get and to make matters worse, the HD version seems to only work in portrait mode on my 2 Samsung devices. It just won't go in to landscape no matter what I do. Whereas the non-HD version works in landscape fine! Bizzare.

Anyway, I've got 2 weeks and have it on 3 devices so I'll see how it plays out...

tnx for the tip
