Looking after those wheels

by argonaut » 06 Dec 2015, 18:42

First off on Corrosion sprays I coat all electrical connectors, plugs, my cruise control motor, throttle linkages etc. with Corrosion Block .... superb stuff.
Also put a squirt over all the hinges.

Once wintering tasks complete I jack up trailer until wheels just clear of ground ... I leave wheels on .... as if I get a bright dry day in Feb I pull it out of boat shed into sun for the day.

I don't cover wheels, but as they are off the ground, once a month I spin them around to just moves the bearings & grease.
Come March I fully strip down hubs wash bearings in petrol, replace any as necessary .. inspect seals (usually replace) and put it all back together .. plus set up brakes.

Great place on-line for seals & bearings only £1.75 a seal with next day delivery (Revolve Bearings on eBay)
and a Taper roller bearing is only £9.4 a pair (WittyDealer on eBay)

I thought I would report that I took the bags etc off my wheel hubs today and I am pleased to say that my idea has worked well. The wheels spin and the brakes etc have not corroded. I will do this again next year

I took the option last year to have tyres removed and rims hot dip galvanized ........ far better than any paint treatment.

Seems nuts that Indespension sell a marine trailer with all beams & fixings galvanized and then put on rims that just have a coat of paint - start rusting after only a few dips in the bay.
