Cowes shakedown!

by NickT » 02 Apr 2016, 20:45

Testing new hydraulic steering just fitted - its amazing when the boat actually goes where you steer it now!

I think there was some water in the fuel tank as the engine was surging on the way over. Will replace the fuel filter now as a lot of crud has probably been collected in it.

Also had a misfire on the engine which eventually cleared.

I will be replacing the plugs as a precaution - I have had 2 seasons (200 hrs) out of them. Is this a lot?

Not many smaller sports boats out today - probably wise as we hit a few waves and I fell onto my son who cushioned the fall...

Nick

Cant see the video you have marked it as private in Youtube. I would change the plugs they are very cheap for what they do

Hi Dennis,

Yes 75 merc with the Yamaha head as in those days merc didn't do a decent 4 stroke.

It's effectively a detuned 90 HP one so I have lots of torque for the HP.

It always amazes me that it does so well, we do24 kts with 4 big adults on it.

With the Solent chop going faster isn't really much fun...

What boat are you bringing to Brixham?

At the moment I am bringing my Bowrider. My Brother is also coming and I have to get his little 16 footer ready. Depending how things go with that I might Bring the 19 GTO and he has the bowrider. I want to fit in a few outings in the 19 GTS first and she is going on the mooring in 2 weeks so might get a chance to get used to her

Time will tell

Interesting that on reading your post further on, you said there weren't many small boats out.
I was thinking, watching your video I can see that there weren't many small boats which would handle that chop at those speeds, in the way your boat seems to.

Hi Ian,

I think it is that other boaters were wise enough not to venture out actually!

I have to say, after the round the island trip in 2014 when we were well and truly goffered by a huge wave which filled the cockpit, I am much more confident in the boat's abilities.

Having said that, I am not complacent at all and I still have palpitations when I see a big wave or hole appearing!

19 ft is still 19 ft........

Before Anna converted, she would put up some vids of them pounding though rough seas at much higher speeds.
