Slight petrol smell in Cuddy

by annageek » 06 Feb 2016, 19:48

I would mirror Martin's/James' comments in so far as there always a slight 'machine oil' smell. Not really the smell of petrol though.

Thinking about it though - if it was an actual petrol leak, I would imagine it would smell a lot stronger of petrol. Think about opening a jerry can of fuel for a few seconds - you can clearly smell petrol from a couple of meters away.

You could always steep the bilges in some industrial degreaser for a week or so to make it smell all lemony, then rinse and see if the petrol smell comes back? Even if you have no leak - your bilges will smell lovely!

As mentioned in another thread , I can strongly recommend using Bounce, the tumble drier sheets. Spread a few around inside the boat. Combine that with keeping the airflow going and it will be sweet smelling

Just a thought, possibly an inspired guess and maybe a rubbish one at that but, is it possible the tank breather at the filler end (if there is one) has become blocked?

If it helps ours has that residual engine smell if we have the all over cover on with the cuddy door open (which we usually do to aid ventilation.

Clear very quickly and no cause for concern.

If you have a fuel leak I would expect a puddle in the bilge as it makes sense for it to drain there.
