MDL Price rise for 2016

by ian h » 09 Dec 2015, 18:50

Just received my invitation to renewal my berthing for 2016 from MDL,

Worked out that they have put up prices by 3.25%

And what do we get for this..................................................................

Still waiting for our fuel berth at Saxon,

For less than half that price i could have a berth in San Carlos with more sunshine.

I haven't even looked at my renewal form yet we know the staff are great there but that's another big increase and it's not like we get much extra as it is.

Mine came through too yesterday. I'm fairly certain we had a price increase last season as well?

I guess they need to pay for all the free drinks that I hear about but never see, and the super new high speed Wifi that I never use.

Our marina fees have gone up every year all through the recession. Over this period the charges have risen way above inflation.

Some people have moved elsewhere .
However there have been brisk boat sales bringing in new people . There are a few unoccupied berths.

I believe the review of costs here is in April.

I find this sort of business frustratingly archaic.

I've been pricing up various dry stacks and Marina,'s recently and have been offered outstanding deals at below normal asking prices and below what current berth holders are paying. With this in mind I undoubtedly will be sucked in to a cheap price now, only to be hit by a price hike in the future. I'm therefore looking at options, not easy obviously, but in the world of dry stack and berthing they don't seem to look after existing customers as well as new customers. MDL do have a great choice but the only way in which I can see a deal happening in the future is when they want me back after I've left them.
Mobile phone companies have the same business ethic.

Same here Ian. Still no news on any extra facilities for the money and, although we keep hearing about welcoming drinks and snacks at other MDL marinas all we get is an occasional help with the lines on arrival. Probably because we're not a real marina? I do feel that, sometimes, we are treated a bit like second class citizens at Saxon.

Don't get me wrong the crew are great there, helpful and friendly, but the facilities leave a lot to be desired.

Not about to double my costs by moving to Hamble Point though

I guess I'm lucky in Conwy. I have a pontoon berth right by the castle off the harbour. All the facilities of a marina except electricity, but we are self sufficient there and views to really crow about. What I struggle to understand is why the two marina's in the estuary are so full and so expensive. Unless you have a 2m daught why pay 6x more to live in a cramped noisy ghetto environment? I am the only regular on my small pontoon of 6 boats. 4 of which I have never actually seen the owners or the boats out. I use a water taxi at a pound a trip and within a couple of minutes (literally 2) can be in the centre of town. Total cost of berth £80 per month.
What is the facination with marinas?

I think your right that Saxon isn't a real marina so they don't do the "trolley of treats" as they call it like the other marinas do where people are staying onboard for the weekend. I don't see why they don't do fuel on the itchen as I wouldn't be going into Hythe or the Hamble if we were berthed at Saxon. One thing I would like as a visitor to MDL marinas is free Wifi especially when you have paid £40+ a night to stay there.

Totally agree . What do we "REALLY" get other than berthing at Saxon ??????

Can not fault the team at Saxon , Very friendly and helpful .
I am a little restricted to whre i can dry stack, Trafalgar is even more expensive !!!
And not is not quite as advertised ,
