Changing a name .....

Yep .. I know it is seen as bad luck to change the name of a boat ... but the wife wants to change the name of our little bayliner .....

she is currently called "Vonny" ... but the wife wants to call her "Marie" .... I'm not so sure ..

Don't do it I say. The name of a boat is its history and something that should follow the boat. Also I am rather superstitious so would not change it. Any way Vonny is quite nice.

My second boat had no name so when I got her and to be true to my on line spending 'issues' I named her Add2Cart

This is a great Topic and one that interests me a lot, we should debate this.
I tend not to believe the stories which tell us that if we rename a boat we could offend Poseidon or Neptune if you don’t strike the name from their ledgers. Neptune is the Roman God of the Sea and Poseidon is the Greek God of the Sea. OK so they could be one and the same with a different name. That being the case, Neptune would be the brother of Zeus and Hades and therefore Zeus and Hades would also be brothers to Jupiter and Pluto, who in Roman Mythology are the brothers of Neptune (Have you fallen asleep yet?). I must say with this information the hardened believers are now closer to the possibility that these two Gods of the sea are in fact, the same and therefore the superstitions may be true. I’ll also add that they both have a consort, partner, wife, other half, SWMBO, whatever you want to call her, with the name of Amphitrite! This now make’s the idea that they exist, more than real.
Where this all goes wrong for me is that there is only one God and therefore they cannot have ever existed as Gods, except to be part of a greater propaganda movement of the day, which either kept law and order or kept the populous under control.
So, for me, there is this plausible explanation for lucky and unlucky vessels, for which owners have changed their names. The owners have not appeased “The Sailors of Old” and these are the true keepers of the ledgers in which all vessels names are kept. Consequently, if you first invoke the previous name to be stricken from the ledger, making sure every bit of the name has been wiped out, then, announce the new name to “The Sailors of Old”, along with plenty of libation and ceremony, then you will at least have tried.
