Engine and drive parts.

by Ianfs » 02 Oct 2016, 18:38

Is it me, or are there fewer and fewer places in the UK to buy engine and drive parts?

What do you think?

Aqua part.co.uk? the web site is still active but not sure as I didnt order anything

Keypart sell almost everything so havent really been elsewhere for a long time. I assume its a sign of the times though, no money to be made from service parts as a lot agents just use Barras? directly the DIY's use Ebay or a few online merchants and theres not enough business to go round.

I tend to find that the parts are listed but are generally in the US

I have only wanted to get a few bits & pieces as my Mercruiser generally keeps A1 between services ............. I must have been lucky, they had mine in stock & arrived within a day or 2.
Depends what you are after I guess.

For me, its all about ordering parts which are required, i.e. gaskets, impellers etc.

Now some maufacturers, e.g. Quicksilver, supply a Stern Drive gasket set with a main gasket which has an extra orange rubber strip running around the upper part of the gasket, so the Quicksilver part is a must as its only about £2 more expensive than the lesser after market part. Suppliers like Keypart supply either the after market part or the Quicksilver part at not much difference in price.

However when you want other parts, like an impeller for example, it only shows an after market part at a price virtually the same as a Quicksilver part and £13 more than an after market part, say Sierra, at another supplier.

So if you want to buy an after market impeller for example , which, given the way in which impellers are very basic and made accordingly, you have to go to 2 different websites with 2 different ways in which to pay delivery costs.

ASAP for example are a great source of supplies or parts for larger boats but don't have much for boats with Mercruiser engines/stern drives etc.

There was a time a few years ago that I could search a website and find both Manufacturers and After Market products, but now they seem to have disappeared.

I was wondering where all the dead engines and boat parts end up! I can't find any proper breakers on the internet...

Proably not enough business to make it pay.
In my area boat yards & chandlers have closed in droves.

Trying living in the midlands! Was doing reasonably well out of parts from the US - until the pound devalued!
