Evening jaunt

by ChrisH » 11 Sep 2016, 18:55

Weather good and tides so decided to head out for an evening on the water. So glad I made the drive down with my son. Wind dropped away and it has been lovely. Little cruise over to Cowes, messed around a it and then up to Hamble village for a bite to eat. Currently there now and will head back to Kemps Marina in the dark. This will be a first for us. Hope we get back safe. :-)

How lovely, hope your night cruise is ok. Should be plenty of residual light on the Hamble tonight, moons quite bright too.

Yep was lovely out there Ian. Got back up to Kemps Quay ok. Bit nerve racking the first time in the dark . So many lights a round it's hard to sport the lights on the navigation bouys. Lesson learned is to stay in the main shipping lanes. Can't come across any nasty surprises that way which we did a couple of times.

A good tip if you are planning to come in late is to make sure your outgoing track is recorded on the GPS and make sure you avoid all of the nasties, especially up the Itchen  That way you can follow your outgoing path back in with a high degree of confidence. ;)

Top tip Colin thanks. Almost came a cropper up the Itchen. Just after those derelict pontoons.

I've often seen boats coming back into the marina when it's dark, and wondered why they don't have some kind of driving lights?

Is it not done because of glare, ruining night site etc?

Our Regal has docking lights, clue is in the name as to what they are for but i have used them as headlights to show the banks of the river at night. Although i wouldn't want to see them shining at me from another boat!

I took a 1000 lumin tourch. Was good at spotting the things we nearly hit. But not great. There's a lot of water out there.
