Hello im new

by Alan1974 » 03 Sep 2016, 09:37

Hi people.
Ive just bought my first ever boat and thought im best to join a good forum.
Its only a cheap boat but its mine lol. Its a 19ft glastron sprit v180. Its been converted from an inboard to a outboard.

It doesnt have a petrol tank so i wanted to ask should i but a plastic portable type rather than try and find a second hand glastron one that fits in the front ?

Also can a portable one be placed in the front nose of the boat or is that too far away from the engine.

There is a big space near outboard where bilge pump is but is that too close for fuel to be with the engine ?

Also as its a 7 seater should i put it in the front to spread the weight away from the rear ??

I will post some pics as im gonna do it up a bit.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum

Some pics would certainly be helpful. The space near the bilge pump near the rear is where the tank would probably be. What is the outboard you will be putting on the boat

Hi and welcome..!
A boat is a boat, doesn't matter what it costs. It's the enjoyment it brings that is the important bit. The cost is in maintaining it... Good call on joining the forum though!
Anyway. i have to be honest, i know very little, in fact nothing about these boats but i would say any plastic portable (approved) fuel can should be fine.. i dont see the point in hanging out for an original one. I would say it will need to be secured properly though..
As for space, as i say, i personally think, and stand to be corrected by members that know more than me on this, that as long as it is a proper boat approved fuel can, it doesnt matter where it sits. length of fuel lead you can get your hands on will be the decider.
Lots more far more knowledgeable people on here than me though, sure they will be along shortly...
Good luck on your purchase though... look forward to the pictures. :D

Hi Alan and welcome to the forum.

This is a great place to start asking questions and getting some idea's.

Is this the sort of thing you had in mind for the fuel tank?

I know a little about outboards but not much, if your boat has been converted there should be a big hole in the bilge by the stern where the engine was which should take a fuel tank easily.

I read somewhere a few years ago that Glastrons were made by Roger Clarke Marine and the Spirit version was named when production finished, then the moulds were taken over by Picton in Glamorgan, however I think Pictons wound up in 2008/10 ish. :(

Oh and there is no such thing as a cheap boat, they are all holes in the water, surrounded by fibre glass into which you throw money......

I'll make a Glastron forum in readers boats for you. Oh and Alan, we like before and after pictures, we have some serial boat restorers around too so would love to see how you do it and maybe you can get some help or even offer some. :D

You would need at least 3 of those tanks plumed in series and filling them would be a nightmare. Look into having a bespoke ali one made. you will need at least 80 ltrs min if you are going 90 hp plus on the outboard

I wouldn't bother with a portable one. Plenty of large tanks on ebay. Fit it in the middle of the boat and low down as possible really. I have mine in the front of the boat. Some don't like it there, but I don't really notice the difference when its full or empty at slow or really quite fast speeds.

The engine will have no problem at all with it in this location. You will need pipework to fill it with, and a separate breather/vent as well. These must be both fitted in a place which by overfilling wouldn't in anyway allow fuel back into the boat.

I did have a fuel tank in the back before, but with people in the back, engine hanging on the back and fuel there, the back was really low and off plane was a pain with the bow in the air.

I will upload some pics now. Lets see if i mess it up lol.

So to reply to some of your comments yes i thought that 30ltr plastic tank would do but is it true im gonna need more like 80ltrs ???

My boat is gonna reflect the rest of my life in a way that i need a little to look like a lot hahaha.
