Anti and Foul indeed

by Bigplumbs » 05 Mar 2016, 16:01

Just finished preparing the hull (ie sanding down the old Antifoul) masking tape to the line and then painting on the first coat of antifoul. This is the first time I have done this and I know why it is called Anti Foul..................................... I am anti the Job and it certainly is a foul job.

Just the second coat to go on tomorrow. It claims that if you put on 2 coats it will last 2 years ................ Your opinions on this would be appreciated. It is Seajet 033 Shogun

I totally agree, it is a foul job and one that i hate every year!!
Although I've not used what you are, i would be very skeptical as to whether it will last for 2 years.. I've never got a whole year without having to touch up areas.
Saying that, I've always gone for self eroding. What type is it?
I'm planning on trying something different this year as i was so disappointed with the paint last year (off the top of my head i cant remember which it was though - not very helpful i know)

Dam I just saw that it said 3 coats for 2 seasons I wont have enough for that so 2 roller coats it will have to be. Then I will have a little left for touching up

Dennis, you're keeping her at a swinging mooring aren't you on the River Deben?

I think the length of time your Anti Foul works depends where you are on the Deben and what the weather will be like this year. If you at Ramsholt I would say that it would be fairly salty, but if you were further up at Tidemill YH would it be fairly brackish?

In salt water, sunny weather produces algae growth just below the waterline and then in ordinary circumstances barnacle's and a few other crustacean's.

You might have to go one season first to find out how your particular make of Anti Foul works in the water you are in. :)

Ian

You seem to know the Deben quite well. I will be near the Ferry so full Salt water I think this is one of the worst places for 'growth'. As you said I wilkl just have to see how it goes in the first season. I can always pull her out and give her a pressure wash and touch up any areas that need it.

I am new to all this Barnicle lark :)

Sometimes doing the AF preseason doesn't always pan out. The worst for barnicles and mussels is when they are breeding. This is usually later in the season and so I tend to lift for a week at the beginning of summer for the AF and clean. It will also give you better protection for a longer duration doing it that way .... with the usual provisio's AFAIC YMMV etc
