So what are you lot doing

by MartynG » 23 Feb 2016, 18:10

I had my engines serviced last week . A minor oil leak from the port engine ,which I thought was nothing much, is diagnosed as due to a turbocharger fault.
Turbo needs to come off.
So we will be going nowhere just yet.
In the meantime we may have to hitch a ride as crew .

She's looking good Dave!
Martin, at least it's been discovered before you start missing the good weather?
I've just managed to get my port head rebuilt after the new valve seats being fitted. Now need to rebuild the engine then re-do tappet heads, timing etc etc.
Other jobs include re-doing my cooker cover that someone sat on and cracked at the end of last season.
Renew impeller and refit drive leg.
Repair a crack in the rear seat aluminium frame.
Adjust the cabin table to make the bed more comfy.
Remove old (redundant) heating tubes to allow more storage space.
Redo antifoul on drive and hull.
Re water-proof cover and canopy.
Remove anchor chain and mark on depths .(sick of not knowing how much I have out!)
Re-do the wiring for my depth sounder (very short term lazy attempt last year  )
Really good clean inside and out.
Full polish.
I remember being in the same position last year, time very quickly ticking away before the warmth and nice weather returns wondering if I'm going to have time to get it all done.

Yes but may be a few weeks to get the turbo sorted as my engineer is much in demand.
To be honest I don't expect we would have been going far before Easter.

My antifoul turned up today, £75 and there was a large dent in the tin. Makes no real difference but they obviously sent it to me mail order as no one would have picked it off the shelf in the shop. Living near ICI as I do I remember buying cheap paint because of dents in the tins. What ever happened to that principal :)

Hi Ian, I really didnt want to antifoul brand new legs, and the factory finish is supposed to be resistant, so I used TK Clear antifoul in a spray...couple of coats...and when she comes out for her quick lift n' scrub i June or July I will check them out and see if they are ok.....she will get plenty of use and they are easy to lift up and clean laying in the dinghy......just couldnt bear to slap paint on for the first time getting wet....

I can certainly understand what you mean about not wanting to paint those new legs. I also looked at the TK clear but it said it would only last up to 3 months so should be ok till your lift out

 I sympathise with the legs, but you're going to have to bite that bullet sooner rather than later. Hempel do a spray on matt black that is fairly soft and erodes off quite well in my experience. Trilux is brilliant but sticks like glue and should thus be avoided until the drives have been christenned and you can chew on the bullet instead of nibble

At first I thought, those brand new legs are only about 10" from concrete, why did they not lift them a little?

Then when she was in he water, I had a deja vu moment!!!

That's Eastlands!

Tim and his wife had literally just bought the place when we decided to park the little Sea Ray with them as trailer sailors. Although the Trailer sailor side, the moorings and the ramp was ok, the rest of it was a bit of a mess, including the tin sheds which are now swish business centre's. We still remember the little tin toilet shed they had when they took over, a tad embarrassing at the time, but useful just the same.

We loved the trip down river to Soton Water and although it was sometimes a pain at 5knts, it was however relaxing, plus the trips further up river were unique.

Hi Ian, yeah its really good there....Tim and Sharon still there obviously...Paul and family at BBMS do my engineering and the boat owners all seem to get on pretty well....and there are no sail types because they cant get under Bursledon bridge (shame) ...Plenty to sit and watch in the summer if we cant be arsed to go out, or put the dinghy in and go upriver for a picnic
This is our 2nd year there, the boat was previously on a mud berth on a ridiculously dangerous pontoon on the Itchen. Got her away from there last spring and brought her round to Eastlands on the one working engine......that was a challenge mooring up when we got there....

Best bit is as the last yard on the river we are pretty much out in the country, and the trip down river to Southampton water and the Solent is never boring....love that bit and lets the motors etc warm up slowly on the way down, and cool down nicely o the way back....
