Think I've bought a boat...

We're both going to take a course on what the hell we should be doing on the water!

Does anyone have any tips for us?

Where should we go? how does it all work? We're probably thinking about solent to IOW...

We've bought a 23ft fishing boat - second hand and will be keeping it at Port Solent

Congratulations and welcome. I used to be based at Trafalgar Wharf just across the way from you. It s quite a nice poodle down through the harbour. I especially enjoyed it coming back after a day out. You have easy access to some if the Solent forts. Quite interesting if you have not seen them before. And it's worth a trip over to Wooton on the IOW. Not too far for one of your first trips. You can moor up at the sailing club pontoon. They charge 5 pounds. And can have a pint from the their clubhouse or walk up the hill to the pub. Which is very nice.

RYA Power Boat leve2 is an aspiration, and I don't knock that.
However if you have no previous boat handling experience, much of level 2 stuff may not 'soak in'

If this is the case you have 2 options ... go out with an experienced boater .... at least for one trip .... or get someone to take you out in your own boat ... maybe someone on here will offer .... I'm not near or I'd happily do the honours.

or undertake the RYA basic introduction to powerboats course ......... do that, get a couple of w/ends under your belt then do the level 2.

I'll step in and offer a days training, As RNLI trained Crew Iam well versed at helping the uninitiated or novices. As long as you cover my petrol to Pompey and a pint we can have a full day messing about on the water with some learning thrown in. oh and I do have RYA PB2.

RYB2 is great but not really needed, it is not a qualification theres no exam so in my mind its not all its pushed to be. I conside rit it more of 2 days around a boat learning the basics and what a chart looks like, it wont help you getting out of trouble or stop you getting into it. Thats why it took me 10 years to bother getting it until it was offered free by the RNLI just to tick a box. oh course being a tight a## helped.

Hi,

That's a very kind offer!

We have course booked for the weekend, two day on our boat out and about.

Any time you have spare would be really appreciated :)

That's a great offer. As for PB2 I couldn't disagree more. What a PB2 does is lay a foundation upon which your skills grow. I've seen to many people, mostly offshore fishermen, who never had a basic foundation on which to build their experience and knowledge. Some of the shit they do is eye opening, but they are convinced it's safe / correct etc because they built their knowledge upon misconception. Coming down from RNLI knowledge to a PB2 I can understand exactly your position. But certainly not in reverse.

PB2 also in effect gets you your ICC (International certificate of competence) and allows you to hire a boat over 30 hp in most of Europe

did you know that the RYA do not administer PB2 other than promote the training & sell the certificates? if you lose your certificate there is no replacement unless through the provider, no records kept etc, there is no recourse for complaints on bad training. All the certificate is to prove you turned up to a class room for 2 days and listened, you can be a total twit and still walk away with it. Thats why the RNLI version had no training just a simple 10 Q paper to prove you knew a pointy end to the blunt end. (Im trying to figure those ones out ) but it was at the end of a week of burning boats and sinking cruise ships.

I know this is a bit of a one sided biased opinion but I really don't see the point of bragging about 'Ive got PB2' as some people do and some organisations insist on, ski lakes for one, when it is just a paid for piece of paper from the power boat loving RYA. I personally believe we should all have a licence and insurance legislation to match and it will take a terror attack or another large accident before someone wakes up and puts it on the agenda.
