Trafalgar Wharf dry stack

by ian h » 29 Dec 2016, 19:48

Boat is currently dry stacked at Saxon Wharf,

Looking at possible move for 2017
Would like to move to Med but it does not work at the moment.

Any good or bad points regards Trafalgar Wharf. Any current customers ?

Hi Ian

I looked at Trafalgar last year, I really like their attitude and business plan. They seem very customer orientated, rather than lets take your cash and not bother helping you but we'll increase your costs every year.

I like the undercover stack, that's a great idea.

Downsides might be distance but I think you are in Reading so its neither here nor there for you. I understand there is a 20min trip to the sea but apart from that all good to me. :)

I'm not a Trafalgar dry stack customer, but I did spend a lot of time there this year teaching powerboating courses. They have great facilities there, and it seems to be very well run.

Hi Chris

Welcome to the forum.

Is marine training your main line of work? Actually, I've just looked you up...ASL Marine training and you have a Westerly kept in The Solent, is that you?

How did you find the 20 min run out to sea?

I spend roughly half of my work time teaching powerboating.

Yes, ASL Marine training, that's me.

I have probably done Trafalgar Wharf Drystack to The Solent and back about 12 to 15 times during 2016. It's an interesting naval harbour, with loads of unusual vessels to look at, so I tend to treat the 25 mins each way as part of the day's trip out.

In fact if it is blowing a gale out in The Solent you can always stay inside the harbour and visit Camber dock or the Mary Mouse Lighship or Gunwharf Quays or Port Solent for lunch (all accessible by boat).

I was there in 2015. But stored on my trailer and not in the dry stack. I found everyone very friendly and helpful. Just wish I could have afforded the drystack . They have a cheaper dry stack solution available now where they keep you on special dry stack trolleys they can move to an outside parking bay. Upside is you can access your boat at anytime.
I'm now at Kemps Key and also live in Reading. It is definately a quicker trip for me to get to Kemps than TW.

Saxon Wharf have put up their prices by 3% this year again .
Hence the reason to look around,

I can get to Saxon in 1 hour on a good day if use the A34 (But hate that road ) usually go back roads via Basingstoke then M3 , 10 miles shorter but 15 mins longer,

I'm in Portsmouth, just around the other side of the harbour from TW and if i'm honest, if i had the option, i would berth in Southampton / Hamble. The reason i say this, is that in my opinion, there is far more options that little further down the Solent. And to be honest, i personally think that if the weather is bad then Southampton water gives much more flexibility.
Likewise, from Portsmouth it is a long way to get all the way down to places like Yarmouth / needles etc.. (Probably not in your rocket ship though  ) I nearly always go West when out of the harbour for the simple fact that there isnt much within a decent distance to the East.

All that said, TW does look like a great place to be based, if i could afford the dry stack fees, being based in Portsmouth, it would be the one i would go for. I have a friend with a boat there and he is more than happy with the service / facilities.
All just my opinion of course.. good luck with the decisions.

I can do kemps in about an hour on a good day. Usually use a33 and m3. Can put my foot down.
Saves me 15 to 20 mins compared to TW.
