Volvo Penta cooling water exhaust

by sprocker » 24 Oct 2016, 07:06

Can anyone explain how/where the wet exhaust system works on Volvo Penta (D3) with DP drive?

We viewed a boat at the weekend and when the engines were run the port side looked to be exhausting water around/through the props mainly, with some exhausting around the top of the leg around the bellows area.

The starboard engine however only seemed to be exhausting from around the top of the leg & bellows area, with little if any exhausting around the props.

This one is a boat on our shortlist and I am unsure if we should be concerned about this difference in coolant exhausting, or if it is normal.

Seems like a familiar question .......about a Sealine perhaps ?
Sounds like exhaust bellow split or slipped off .

Can you be specific about which DP drive as different incarnations of the DP drives vent exhaust differently. For instance my DP-D's cannot vent from props but through anti cavitation plate.

Also, there are one or two boats with twin D3 160's about which are cheap. I walked away after advice that they weren't much good which is why Volvo stopped making them.

Ian - The engines are 2006 D3-190,s with DPS-M drives. (I also have my reserves about the D3-160's).

Bruce - I can't say for definite exactly whether they are exhausting around/thru prop hub or just in that area. The question was more aimed at the starboard engine which is not exhausting from that area, but is flooding out from the top of the leg/bellows area.

Martyn - It could be that as you suggest (Not a Sealine by the way Martyn) that the exhaust bellow has simply come off or split, although the legs were serviced last in February 2016.

I guess I'm trying to get my head around whether this is worth taking forward to a survey or not, my only reservation is this potential issue.

It doesn't sound that serious and certainly this sort of problem would have to enter into any offer agreement.

Thats what I am thinking Ian, but as this is my first 'entry' into diesel engines I thought I would get the collective advice of more experienced boaters.
